I don't know how to put a grill together. I don't know how to be an adult. I don't know how to accept a gift. But I'm trying.

Assembling a Char-Broil Performance Series 4-Burner Gas Grill


Adult legos required
patience in delivery
and assembly.
I step into voluntary Dad-rage
that I thought came with age.
Now I know it comes with
parts
segmented, lettered, 
numbered, partitioned
to be 
popped out with a steak knife, freed from cardboard clamps.
I am their savior,
I give purpose,
I am Adam giving names to grills.

We were given things,
my love and I.
We were given things
we didn’t work for.
We were condemned to be gracious,
less familiar with generosity.

But I do not
complain of gift horses 
and mouths of glittering bones.
I looked.
